Energetic New Video Highlights Talents of the MRHHS Band
By the time Jason Harris steps down as MRH band director in the summer of 2018, his legacy will have been well-preserved, not just in the hearts and minds of his students and colleagues but in a series of extraordinary videos as well.
The latest promotional video is a collaboration between Harris and Caleb Wylde, a multimedia wizard based in St. Louis. The video features rapid-fire editing, multi-angle camera shots, and highly stylized lighting and costumes.
Harris' students have performed in a number of other videos as well. In "The Drumming Song," (2017), percussionists take center stage in a program reminiscent of the Blue Man Group. In 2016, the band produced an extraordinary video titled "Back to the Sixties," impressively choreographed by MRH Central Office Administrative Assistant Kat Norton.
Jason Harris has directed the MRH band for 11 years. Among his accomplishments:
National Magna Award for the High School Rhythm and Blues Band for its innovative approach to music education while serving as an ideal model for the High School’s “school as apprenticeship” metaphor (2017).
MRHSD Spirit of the Year Award (2017)
Produced the band’s first CD recording, "I'm With the Band" (2015)
Rhythm and Blues Band yearly performances on the main stage at the annual Taste of Maplewood street festival.
Collaborated with Jazz at the Bistro to bring world class musicians to MRH to perform for staff and students.
May 9 is the date for Harris' final concert with MRH.
