MRHHS Student Wants Your Pet to Have a Good Night's ( or Day's ) Sleep
The original idea came from Matthew Haugsness's mom... sort of.
"Mom was working from home at the time, and I realized that our dogs needed beds to be around her," said Matthew, an incoming junior at Maplewood Richmond Heights High School.
His quest to provide a comfortable and welcoming space for Boo Boo and Hazel Grace sparked an idea which he and father Tom Haugsness picked up and ran with: take old, discarded furniture such as chairs, end tables, and beds... and restore them as luxury amenities for the four-legged. They called their company "Haugie's Doggies."
"I have a background in woodworking and cabinet-making," said Tom Haugsness. "This venture has helped Matt develop business and technical skills."
Matt will attend South Technical High School in the afternoons during the 2017-18 school year.
So far, the father/son entrepreneurs have rung up sales in Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee and Wisconsin. Their range of products also includes wall-mounted pegs and hooks for leashes and other pet supplies.
"We'll be participating in the 'Let Them Eat Art' event in Maplewood on July 14th, at Airedale Antics," said Tom. "Haugie's Doggies" has also received support from "Treats Unleashed" but for now, their sales are being handled via the Etsy web site.
You can also check out their inventory on the "Haugie's Doggies" Facebook page.
