Middle School Expedition to United Provisions in University City
This week, seventh grade stewards began their global problems research unit by exploring “What the World Eats.” They began on Monday with an investigation of poster-size photos from the book Hungry Planet. These posters depict everything that an average family consumes in a given week, allowing students to compare 12 different countries from around the globe. Students examined the types and amount of food consumed, food cost, food sources, average healthcare costs, and life expectancy.
Later in the week they visited United Provision, an international grocery store located in the Delmar Loop. As part of their visit, students researched and sampled international foods, and completed a scavenger hunt. In addition to United Provisions, seventh graders also visited Plowsharing Crafts where they learned about its mission of Fair Trade. Plowsharing Crafts works to provide a living wage to skilled artisans in over 35 developing nations around the world.
