MRH to Cancel Girls Basketball for the 2016-17 Season
The MRH administration has approved the High School’s plan to place the girls basketball team on hiatus for the 2016-2017 school year. The program currently suffers from low student interest and other commitments/conflicts from potential players. The team has only four athletes and needs at least eight to be able to effectively compete against other schools.
“This was a difficult recommendation for the High School athletic and administrative team to make,” said Superintendent Karen I. Hall. “But we’ve reached a point where we needed to make a decision on the entire season to be able to inform the schools we are scheduled to play beginning in December.”
The District has closely monitored student interest in athletics, clubs, and other programs at both the Middle and High School in order to make appropriate changes to extracurricular offerings. Numerous other clubs and activities have been added in recent years such as Key Club, Student Group on Race Relations (SGORR), Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), and cross country.
“For now, this is a one-year cancellation for the team as our surveys show younger female students in the Middle School are currently interested in playing basketball once they reach the High School,” noted High School Athletics Coordinator Amber Jordan. “We are also looking at the possible addition of a new girls sports such as softball with the goal of ensuring our offerings are aligned with student interest.”
“Sports and clubs are a vital component of our students’ learning here at MRH, and we are all committed to provide the appropriate mix of opportunities for teamwork and leadership for our kids,” added Hall. “Interests and needs change over time, and MRH will continue to adapt to ensure we are meeting the needs of our students.”
