Famed Children's Book Author Captivates MRH ECC Students

An all-school assembly greeted Loren Long, the esteemed author and illustrator of the New York Times bestselling picture books OtisOtis and the Tornado, Otis and the Puppy, An Otis Christmas and Otis and the Scarecrow.

The Early Childhood Center gymnasium was packed as Long read passages from several of his books. The students were particularly fascinated when he described the time he and his two sons visited President Barack Obama in the White House. Long eventually illustrated Mr. Obama's picture book Of Thee I Sing.  He got big laughs from the kids when he said he once got a kiss on the cheek from singer and actress Madonna, another author whose book he illustrated.

Long's most recent work, Little Tree, is a picture book for all ages which was published in 2015.

The native of Lexington, Kentucky, told the ECC crowd that he grew up loving baseball and drawing.  In high school, he took every art class they offered, studying artists like Vincent Van Gogh, Picasso and Norman Rockwell. He later went to The American Academy of Art in Chicago and got his first job as an illustrator at a greeting card company. Ultimately, he drew pictures for Sports Illustrated, Time, Reader’s Digest and Forbes.

Long currently lives in Cincinnati and says he tries hard to root for the Reds when they play the St. Louis Cardinals.
